Synthetic Upholstery

synthetic fabric upholstery

Fabrics made of synthetic fibres, such as acrylic, polyester, nylon or olefin, are generally easier to clean. They stand water well and  any type of water-based cleaning product can be used. If the upholstery is removable it can even be put it in a laundry machine. However it is always smart to check the label on furniture to check for instructions for specific treatment or product. Test the cleaning product on an inconspicuous area to see if there is shrinkage or discoloration. If these occur, try another furniture cleaning agent.

Natural Upholstery

natural fabric upholstery

There are some types of upholstery which are made of 100% natural fibres, most often cotton and wool, but sometimes silk, velvet or linen. Typically natural fabrics retain a lot of water so wet cleaning is not a good idea, however steam cleaning can be appropriate. Generally, with the correct items, you can clean these fabrics yourself unless the label says otherwise. When you clean natural upholstery you’re okay with water-based product, but be moderate when applying it. Too much moisture can cause shrinking or ‘water rings’.

Combined Upholstery

Very often you will find upholstery a fabric composition that is a combination of natural and man-made fibres. Most commonly is a cotton or wool which are blended 50/50 with some synthetic threads. The safest option when dealing with blended fabrics is to hire the professional upholstery cleaners in South East QLD. Combined fabrics usually require special treatment to avoid shrinking or other damage. Sometimes a label may specify a DIY option as a cleaning method but even so, we strongly advise against it.
